I am looking and I have stumbled upon some open source software like osCommerce and Zen Cart
Do they offer a store front and how secure are they?
is there a lot of trouble shooting involved?
Will I have to be efficient in PHP?
I have an existing domain can I use one of these open source packages with it?

I just installed Zen Cart as a one click install from dreamhost. Everything went well, and I have gotten to the finished installin page. But now it says the final step is :
“For security, you will need to reset your configure.php files located in the /admin/includes/ and /includes/ folders back to read-only mode before allowing people to access your store.
”
I have no idea how to do this! I tried the set up instructions and they say:
“Delete the zc_install directory and change the admin/includes/configure.php and the includes/configure.php files to not be writable (by anybody) or world-readable!
(That’s: chmod 440 configure.php from the command line..)”
Which confuse me more! Please help! I am using dreamweaver and am very confident in using files and ftp etc. I have located the files I just have no idea what to do with them.
Thanks!

I want to setup a pay for content site that will provide information (no porn). I am looking for open source software or a company that will allow to do so. I can program in nearly any language but this is my first time in the pay for content world. Mainly i need to be able to to charge for time based subscriptions to content. I have looked at ccbill but there percentage is pretty high and they seem to have strong ties to porn. I have looked at many carts - zen cart, oscommerce, etc but they are more of stores and not subscription based. Any hekp is greatly appreciated

I have been looking for a catalogue software and have decided to use an ecommerce cart. The two main ones I am considering are:
Zen Cart
VirtueMart
Since I am selling videos I want there to be an option to play a 30sec,10sec, whatever sec clip of the video. I believe that VirtueMart is tied in with Joomla so this should be possible but I would like confirmation/non confirmation before I go ahead and download it. As well, if you happen to know of a cart that can do this please advise.

osCommerce, Zen, or Cube shopping cart?
I don’t want to waste precious time finding out which shopping cart is better and more versatile, so if anyone has good (or bad) experiences with these or other shopping carts, please put them down here.
Which one is best overall? Also, If there’s a free shopping cart that’s good and I don’t know of, please inform me.
